About
TCDC invites you to discover new perspectives and find inspiration at the **Crafting From The North Showcase** — an exhibition featuring 41 unique materials sourced from various provinces across northern Thailand. Each material tells the story and spirit of its region, reinterpreting local natural resources, ways of life, and the relationship between people and their environment. The showcase highlights how traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation can come together, with a focus on thoughtful, functional design that can be sustainably developed for contemporary design and creative industries.
The 41 materials are organized into four categories:
- **Fashion & Lifestyle** — including hemp fabric woven from hemp bark fibers, with an uneven texture, occasional knots, and natural gaps in the weave that make it light and breathable to wear.
- **Architect & Interior** — including กระจกจืน (lead glass), a traditional local material historically used to decorate Buddha statue bases, chapel walls, ornamental thrones, and antique objects, now reimagined for modern architecture and interior design.
- **Craft & Packaging** — including banana sheath leather, an eco-friendly alternative material made from various banana species, coated with rice flour adhesive, chemical-free and highly durable — suitable for décor, furniture, fashion, and sustainable packaging.
- **Healthy & Beauty** — including silk fiber sheets, an innovation from research into training silkworms to spin their fibers into flat sheets. The production process is environmentally friendly and generates income for communities in Chiang Rai. The sheets can be developed into face masks, surgical masks, or wound dressings.
Whether you're a designer, entrepreneur, or art enthusiast, these materials are sure to inspire and open up new possibilities for creative material use.
